HAPPY ONAM

The folk songs of Onam describes the rule of Mahabali like this.

When Maveli ruled the land,

All the people were equal.

And people were joyful and merry;

They were all free from harm.

There was neither anxiety nor sickness,

There were no illnesses.

Death of the children was never even heard of,
There were no lies,

There was neither theft nor deceit,

Measures and weights were right;

No one cheated others.

When Maveli ruled the land,

All the people were equal.

Did such a utopian rule by a King ever exist in Kerala?

If so why was he de-throned and pushed in to 'Pathalam'?

Happy Onam to all.

Let us all wish that we or our future generation will see a Golden era like Maveli rule again.

  1. wasn't this a bedtime story - that has become a folk tale?

  2. Anrosh,
    May be true. But it is interesting that a 'Asura' king and his rule is eulogised like this throughout the State in bed time story. May be some historical truths may be there.
    My reading of it is like this.
    Most probably a local King who ruled Kerala very well was defeated by a stronger rival who came from North. To give legitimacy for the new ruler this change in rulers might have been linked to Vamana avatar story.
